Sat/Sun 2nd/3rd Nov 2013

5pm - 8.30pm, free

The third Shimmer event took place on 2nd/3rd November 2013 and was a great success. An estimated 18,000 people passed through the site over the 2 days with the added treat of the North Tyneside Firework Display on the Sunday. Despite challenging weather on Saturday, several thousand people braved the wet and windy conditions, whilst Sunday was the perfect night and record numbers came out to enjoy the combination of artworks and fireworks.

Thanks go to all those who made it happen - organisers, artists, staff and crew, and to the audience who came in their droves and made it an unforgettable weekend.

The event showreel is now available - relive the event here Thanks to Alan Fentiman for doing a fabulous job. Find out more about him and his work here

There is also new video content from Realtyne and Colin Priest. The 2 videos used in Tunnel of Love and a retrospective of 3 years of Flash Fog can be found from the artwork links below.

This year's programme once again combined old favourites with new commissions.

Shimmer 2013 saw the welcome return of Worldbeaters Music with Spark! After a stunning debut in 2012, this show has toured the world over the last 12 months, but you saw it first here in Whitley Bay! Another favourite was Colin Priest with Flash Fog, returning for a 3rd appearance, this time inside the wonderful domed space of the iconic Spanish City. Realtyne also returned but with a new commission for the ground floor - Tunnel of Love.

Other new commissions were 4 installations set up across the grassed Links. Piccolo Cinema presented an entertaining 50's style sci-fi 'B' movie, Andy McKeown presented his projection installation BeachHUTS, David Boultbee created a cluster of Zoetropes and Richard Broderick created Spanish Arcade, an LED promenade work.

Once again, the biggest hit of 2013 was Spark! Those colourful, magical drummers stole the show, leading the audience across the site, enthralling everyone with their choreographed characters.
