Sat/Sun 3rd/4th Nov 2012

5pm - 8.30pm, free

The second Shimmer event took place on 3rd/4th November 2012 and was a huge success. An estimated 18,000 people passed through the site over the 2 days with the added treat of the North Tyneside Firework Display on the Sunday.

Thanks go to all those who made it happen - organisers, artists, staff and crew, and to the audience who came in their droves and made it an unforgettable weekend.

Congratulations also go to Janice Fairhurst - the winner of the Shimmer 2012 facebook photography competition with this image printed in the March 2013 edition of The Journal Culture magazine.

The event combined new commissions with selected works from 2011.

dome projection

Shimmer 2012 saw the return of Novak Collective's Diversión, a spectacular projection onto the front of the iconic Spanish City Dome. Installations were set up across the grassed Links with new commissions from Realtyne and Aether and Hemera, whilst Worldbeaters Music premièred their new show across the site.

Colin Priest returned to transfer his popular installation from the beach to the Links, Joe Pochciol made the audience the stars of their own show, whilst community filmmaker Robin Webb worked with local schools and community groups to transform Waves Leisure Pool with a new large scale projection.

Perhaps the biggest hit of 2012 was Spark! the colourful drummers of Worldbeaters Music that led audience across the site and enthralled everyone with their choreographed characters.

"By far and away the best thing was the drummers. Their show was AWESOME! The best thing I've seen in years, visually stunning and featuring some really talented musicians."

"The drummers were excellent - loud, scary, challenging but in an accessible and exhilarating way, inspiring. So different from the carnival parade style that people would be more familiar with."

"We visited Shimmer on the Saturday night, 3 adults and 2 children, we came from Morpeth after reading about the event on Facebook. We thought it was fantastic - all the light installations were excellent, and the kids loved the little fairground. We would definitely go again next year and would spread the word to more friends as well. Thank you!
