The first Shimmer took place on 5th/6th November 2011 and was a huge success! At least 6,500 people passed through the site, providing an extra dimension to the traditional Whitley Bay Links fireworks display. This new site specific projection and lighting event produced by North Tyneside Council comprised of a programme of specially commissioned works to reflect and celebrate the themes, traditions and timelessness of this beloved seaside location. Plans are being made for a follow up event in 2012 - find out more here

The highlight of the event was Diversión, a spectacular projection onto the front of the iconic Spanish City Dome. Activities extended on to the beach where new commissions from Colin Priest and Arcus Studios added fun, intrigue and atmosphere. Community involvement with Infinite Arts and Gavin Lockhart saw residents of all ages participate in the production of new work to reflect their experience of the seafront. North Tyneside Youth Circus premiered their new fire show and work by John Kefala-Kerr was revived in a seafront shelter.

"My 5 year old especially enjoyed the atmospheric 'Flash Fog'. We all really loved 'Diversion' too (especially my 65 yr old mother) and my 10 year old daughter thought '5 o'clock shadow' was great too. Something for everyone and all ages!"

"We found Shimmer utterly enchanting. The images and animations chosen evoked a sense of time and place, giving new life and a reminder of a vibrant past. The atmosphere on the prom last night was lovely and it was great to see people out enjoying the event. The beauty of the location was only enhanced by the art."

“We went to see all of this yesterday and it was absolutely brilliant! The Diversion projection was stunning, so beautiful it brought the building to life and was like magic. The NTY Circus were excellent I was so impressed. I loved the projection onto the beach and the fog and lights installation was fun too. I sat and listened to some very strange music by the beach too. All in all a fabulous event, and I was proud to live here and walk to such brilliant entertainment.”
